AI Is Changing the Rhythm of Work

September 14, 2026 · Keith Pasley

AI is starting to change something we have taken for granted for a long time. The workday.

Most knowledge work is still organized around people working roughly the same hours. AI agents don’t work that way.

I can give an AI agent research, analysis or another task and move on to something else. It can continue working while I am in a meeting, away from my computer or sleeping. I come back, review the work, apply my judgment and decide what happens next.

Microsoft’s 2026 Work Trend Index points toward more organizations where people direct and supervise AI agents. Anthropic’s economic research is also showing meaningful time savings on tasks where AI is being used.

I think this eventually changes how we measure work.

If AI can continue working without me, the value of my day becomes less about how many hours I spent producing something and more about what I accomplished.

Did I make the right decision?

Did I solve the customer problem?

Did I move the project forward?

Did I use AI effectively and verify the result?

There is also a management decision here.

If AI helps someone accomplish eight hours of work in five, automatically filling the other three hours with more work misses part of the opportunity.

AI could give people more flexibility in when and how work gets done while allowing the business to continue operating beyond the traditional workday.

AI can work 24 hours. People shouldn’t have to.

The opportunity is to get better outcomes from both.

Technology doesn’t create business value. Better decisions do.
