AI Agents Are Moving From Tasks to Business Responsibilities
October 5, 2026 · Keith Pasley
OpenAI’s new Dots caught my attention—not because businesses need another AI assistant, but because of what they signal about where enterprise agents are heading.
Most organizations still think about AI agents in terms of tasks:
Research an account.
Analyze a document.
Prepare a report.
Update a record.
Dots point toward something different: persistent agents that can maintain context, work across connected applications, and continue working toward a goal. OpenAI is also describing specialist Dots that can take on dedicated responsibilities within an organization.
That changes the business question from:
“What tasks can we automate with agents?”
to:
“What business responsibilities are we prepared to delegate to agents?”
Imagine a sales agent that doesn’t just research an account when asked, but continuously monitors assigned accounts, identifies changes, prepares recommendations, and escalates opportunities.
Or a customer-success agent responsible for monitoring a portfolio for risk signals and recommending interventions.
Or a procurement agent continuously watching contracts, pricing, and renewal dates.
That’s more than productivity.
It starts changing how work is organized.
But this is also where businesses need to make better decisions about agents.
Before assigning an ongoing responsibility to an AI agent, leaders should define:
Outcome → Boundaries → Escalation → Measurement → Human Accountability
And I think measurement is particularly important.
An organization with 100 agents isn’t necessarily more AI-mature than one with 20.
The real measure of enterprise agent adoption should be the business outcomes those agents measurably improve.
The next phase of enterprise AI isn’t simply deploying more agents.
It’s moving from:
Agent → Task
to:
Agent → Responsibility → Business Outcome → Accountability
That’s when agents stop being an interesting AI capability and start becoming part of the business operating model.
Executive takeaway: Don’t start by asking where you can deploy agents. Start by identifying which business responsibilities have clear enough outcomes, boundaries, and measurements that some of the work can responsibly be delegated to an agent.
Technology does not create business value. Better decisions do.
