AI Governance Is Becoming an Investment Decision
September 14, 2026 · Keith Pasley
AI governance is becoming part of the AI investment decision.
That became more visible this week when concerns about the pace of AI development and the ability of safety controls to keep up contributed to pressure on AI-related stocks.
There is a broader lesson here for enterprise leaders.
We tend to evaluate AI investments around capability and potential business value.
What can the technology do?
What problem can it solve?
What productivity or revenue opportunity could it create?
Those are important questions, but there are others that belong in the same investment decision.
Can we secure it?
Can we govern it?
Can we operate it reliably?
Do we have the data, infrastructure and skills to support it?
What happens as the capability increases?
And what will it actually cost to scale?
A technically impressive AI use case can still be a poor investment if the organization cannot safely and economically operate it in production.
That is why I think AI governance needs to move closer to the beginning of the investment process.
Executives should evaluate business value, capability, risk, operational readiness and economics together.
Then decide whether the investment deserves to move forward and how far it should scale.
That is a better AI decision.
Technology doesn’t create business value. Better decisions do.
