The AI Race Is Becoming a Full-Stack Architecture Race

The 10-trillion-parameter number in Alibaba’s latest announcement will probably get most of the attention.
I’m more interested in what they’re building around it.
Alibaba isn’t just building bigger Qwen models.
They’re building their own AI chips.
They’re building the infrastructure connecting those chips.
And they’re expanding the data-center capacity needed to run all of it.
That’s a much bigger story.
We’ve spent a lot of time comparing AI models. Which one is faster? Which one performs better? Which one costs less?
Those questions still matter.
But a great model doesn’t mean much if the infrastructure underneath it can’t deliver the performance at a cost the business can support.
Compute matters.
Networking matters.
Power and cooling matter.
Inference cost matters.
Security and governance matter.
And all of it has to work together.
That’s why I think the AI race is becoming as much an architecture race as a model race.
For enterprises, I wouldn’t start with:
Which model is best?
I’d start with:
What AI capability does the business need, and what architecture can deliver it at the performance, cost and scale we can actually support?
Those are two very different decisions.
Technology doesn’t create business value. Better decisions do
