The Next AI Competitive Advantage May Be Industry Expertise, Not Better Models.

HCLTech just introduced 20 industry-specific AI solutions spanning banking, healthcare, manufacturing, retail, energy, and other sectors.
What caught my attention wasn’t the number of solutions.
It was the strategy behind them.
For the past few years, much of the AI conversation has focused on which model is faster, smarter, or less expensive.
But what happens when powerful AI models become available to nearly everyone?
The technology itself becomes less of a competitive differentiator.
Understanding the customer’s business becomes more important.
Consider two technology partners selling AI to a manufacturing company.
One demonstrates an impressive AI platform.
The other understands production bottlenecks, quality-control processes, inventory costs, and how those issues affect profitability.
Which partner is better positioned to identify a valuable AI opportunity?
I would argue it’s the second.
HCLTech’s announcement reinforces an important opportunity for technology solution providers.
Industry knowledge may become more valuable than simply knowing how to deploy AI technology.
This has implications for how partners build their practices, develop sales expertise, and choose which markets to serve.
The executive decision: Should your AI practice try to serve every industry with general-purpose solutions, or develop deeper expertise in a few industries where you can deliver repeatable, measurable business results?
Executive takeaway
Don’t compete only on AI technical expertise. Build expertise in the business problems your customers are willing to pay to solve.
